New York City Highlights for Kids

While many families associate New York State with nature, New York City is packed with kid-friendly experiences that can easily fill several days. We usually do a 2 day New York City itinerary because we can see a lot but also not feel overwhelmed with the city.

Top family favorites include:

  • Exploring playgrounds and open space in Central Park
  • Visiting the Statue of Liberty
  • Hands-on exhibits at children’s museums
  • Iconic skyline views from observation decks
  • Ferry rides with built-in sightseeing
  • See a Broadway show
  • Explore Times Square

Best for ages: 5+ (but doable with younger kids with planning)
How long to plan: 2–4 days
Pro tip: Focus on one neighborhood per day to avoid burnout.

Adding NYC to a broader New York State road trip gives your family a mix of high-energy city adventure and slower-paced outdoor exploration.

Adirondack Mountains

If your family loves the outdoors, the Adirondacks offer some of the most scenic and relaxing family vacation spots in New York State.

The Adirondacks is the largest park in the United States. It covers 1/5 of New York State and is three times the size of Yellowstone. It encompasses many little villages and towns.

The best time to visit is the fall when the New York state foliage is at its peak. Winter can be a beautiful time to visit too. Honestly there is something to see during any season.

We have visited the Adirondacks for a few different trips. Each one has offered a little bit of a different experience. We’ve always visited during the off-season giving us a different perspective than a typical summer visit.

Popular family activities include:

  • Easy lakefront hikes
  • Canoeing and paddleboarding
  • Swimming at public beaches
  • Visiting nature centers
  • Scenic drives through mountain passes
  • The Wild Center
  • Lake Placid Olympic Center

Best for ages: All ages (choose trail difficulty wisely)
How long to plan: 2–5 days
Pro tip: Book lakefront cabins early for summer travel.

The Adirondacks are perfect for unplugging and giving kids space to explore nature, a completely different experience from NYC but equally memorable.

If you are like me you may appreciate nature but not want to spend the entire day on a hike, great if you are an experienced hiker, but if not I highly recommend spending time at The Wild Center. The treetop playground is a fun for all ages outdoor activity that we all enjoyed.
