New York City is one of the most popular destinations and for good reason- it has Broadway, incredible museums, and a unique vibe that needs to be experienced at least once. We live about 5 hours away, in Rochester, NY, and have gone on multiple NYC trips when our kids were all different ages. Now we are visiting New York City with teens and it has been some of the best trips we have experienced.

The thing about New York City is you cannot fit it all in one trip. Once you accept that, you can stop trying to do it all and start enjoying it. Visiting NYC with teens adds another layer of fun because they can have more of an input on what they want to experience.

Broadway shows they actually want to see, trying unique food offerings, landmarks they have seen in movies or on the internet, and a pace and energy that matches where they are in life right now.

We have made the drive from Rochester to New York City a handful of times and the approach is always the same- pick the things that matter most to your family, plan around those, and leave room for the unexpected.

Don’t try to do everything. The families who try to do everything are the ones who end up exhausted and arguing on the subway. Pick your priorities, build your days around them, and let the city do the rest. Here is how we plan a New York City itinerary with teens.

New York City With Teens-Our Experience

This summer was our 4th trip to New York City as a family of 5 and I feel like each trip is completely different. Our first trip to New York City was in February 2021. Covid had changed the city and it was just starting to slowly come back to life.

Then we followed it up with two trips in 2023. One in the winter and one in the fall. For both we had a full itinerary and explored new areas of the city.

Our most recent trip was the summer of 2026 where we experienced what it is like walking around the city with high humidity and heat. You will need A/C breaks.

All of these trips leave us wanting to see more than we can really fit in a weekend. Luckily we are close enough to the city to plan weekend getaways and try to visit as often as we can.

Before we get into our detailed NYC itineraries I want to share a few basic things to know when planning your visit to NYC with teens.

Planning a New York City Trip- What to Know Before You Leave Home

New York City can feel very overwhelming but once you learn a few things it is a fairly easy city to get around. Be sure to consider a few of these things before you leave home.

Best Time To Visit New York City

New York City is a year round destination but some seasons are better, and less expensive, than others. Weather in the winter months can range from very cold single digits to 30s/40s. Spring and Fall are mild, and summer is hot and humid.

Spring and Fall are good options because you avoid the summer crowds and have nice weather. Keep in mind Summer and during the holidays are very busy and accommodation prices will reflect the busy season. If you want to stay on a budget consider an early fall or winter visit.

Getting to New York City from Rochester, NY

We drove into New York City from Rochester, New York. At first I was hesitant to drive into the city, but it was actually very easy. We went directly to our hotel and parked for the duration of our trip. I wouldn’t recommend driving around the city once you arrive, but to get in and out it worked.

Other options are taking the train into the city or flying into one of the NYC airports like JFK, LaGuardia, or Newark. Be sure to factor in cost of transfer from airport to hotel. LaGuardia is the closest airport to Manhattan.

Compare costs of parking your vehicle for the weekend with flying or taking the train into the city. Parking is at least $75.00 a night or more and may be more costly than other transportation options.

Getting Around New York City

The best way to get around New York City is to walk. You get to see everything and there are so many surprises throughout NYC that you will stumble upon.

If the walk is too long you may want to consider the subway. We have taken the subway numerous times on our trips. Just like any public transportation you need to be aware of your surroundings and use caution.

Logistically it is very easy to use and you can use your credit card to go through the turnstiles. No need for a metro card anymore. I suggest researching the subway and how to use it before you find yourself in the middle of the city. More information can be found here.

Overall we have had positive experiences on the city but if you are not comfortable uber/lyft and cabs are readily available.

How Many Days do You Need in NYC

If this is a once in a lifetime trip you will want to plan a week in New York City. The biggest attractions are located across different spots in the city and it is best to focus on one area a day instead of bouncing all over the city.

We find 2 nights in NYC to be the sweet spot. The chaos and bustle of the city can be overwhelming. A weekend trip can give you enough time to really enjoy the city without feeling exhausted.

How many days you need will depend on how far you are traveling. The longer your travel time the longer you will most likely want to stay in New York.

If you have a weekend to visit New York City you are going to have to decide on must see attractions and things you might need to save for your next visit.

Where to Stay in New York City with Teens

There are places to stay all over NYC that range from budget friendly to luxury. New York City is an expensive city to stay in, especially for a family of 5 or more.

When planning your accommodations be sure to include all fees and consider where you want to visit. Pick a location based on things you want to see and do.

Where to Stay in New York City

We have stayed at 4 different hotels and all of them were good for the weekend. I prefer the Times Square locations when planning to see a Broadway show for an easy walk back after the show.

Marriott Marquis Times Square (Times Square)
Homewood Suites on 37th Street. (Midtown)
Westin New York Times Square (Times Square)
Four Points by Sheraton Manhattan SoHo Village. (SoHo)

Two things to consider when looking at NYC hotels:

First is location. What attractions do you want to see? How will you get to them? If you are visiting attractions in one area consider staying in that area. If you are visiting places all over the city consider a central location.

Second is cost. New York City hotels can be very expensive but there are budget friendly places available. Most of the budget friendly options are no-frills and small. Do not expect a lot of space in a NYC hotel room.

As a family of five we found it very difficult to find a place we could “fit” without booking 2 rooms or larger suites. If you are a larger family on a budget consider booking a room that fits 4 and ask the hotel for a cot or bring an air mattress.

If you are still in the research phase explore the map below for prices and locations.

New York City Itinerary

Our most recent trip to New York City was our 4th trip to NYC. For each trip I plan a different itinerary and include different attractions. Even with four trips we have only scratched the surface of what there is to see and do.

For this post I want to share all of our New York City Itineraries, in order from the most recent to the oldest, so you can mix and match the things that are on your list for a NYC trip or copy and paste an exact trip like we did.

New York City Trip (Summer 2026)

This was probably our most relaxed trip to NYC because the kids were all old enough to walk around and share what they wanted to do.

It was our first real New York City with teens trip because all 3 of my kids are now teenagers. One big surprise during this trip is we planned way more than we could actually accomplish. On our second day we were supposed to spend time in Central Park and had to completely scrap it.

The overall trip was still a success and if we had more time I would have planned another day.

Our New York City with Teens Itinerary Overview:

  • Day 1– Check into hotel around 11:30am, NYC Library-view Winnie the Pooh display, Grand Central Station, FAO Schwartz, NBC Studio Tour, rest at room, Joey’s Pizzeria, Disney Store Times Square
  • Day 2- Bagels to Sandwich Breakfast, Chinatown Food Tour (self guided), Canal Street, Rest at Room, Stranger Things-The First Shadow show, Times Square Midnight Moment
  • Day 3- American Dream

Details on our Itinerary for New York City:

I am going to go into the most detail for this recent trip because everything is updated and current. For the rest of our itineraries I condensed it a bit for easier reading.

Day 1- Arrive in New York, NBC Studio Tour

We wanted to maximize our time on this trip and have 2 full days in NYC. For this reason we left our house early and arrived in NYC around 10:30am. Our room was not ready at the Marriott Marquis so we stored our luggage with the concierge and went out to start our day.

When we travel we prefer planning self-guided tours so we can set our own pace. We did this during our London itinerary and it always works well for us.

It does take a bit of research before you arrive. We had to put all the spots we wanted to visit into maps and figure out the best order for our day. For day 1 we started at the New York City library to see the Winnie the Pooh display, then walked to Grand Central Terminal, with a final stop at FAO Schwartz before we picked up lunch from a food cart.

We found a shaded spot to eat lunch and took our time people watching. Our next stop was the NBC Studio Tour, we had 3:00pm reservations.

I have mix feelings on the Studio Tour. The tour guides were amazing. They were engaging and chatted with us throughout the tour. In regards to what we actually saw- it was pretty minimal. This may be because we toured in the summer when many shows are not filming but it had a quiet vibe to it.

The highlights of the tour were seeing the SNL studio. It was really cool to see the full space they use to put on the show. We also got to see the Tonight Show studio and it was the only place on the tour we were allowed to take photos of.

This is the third studio tour we have done. We toured Warner Bros Studio in Burbank and The Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour in London, both of these were huge studio lots. NYC does not have the size of these tours. Looking back that is part of the charm of the NBC Studio tour, learning how they film using such a small space.

Overall I would recommend this for fans of SNL or the Tonight Show. We all enjoyed the tour but were hoping to see more behind the scenes daily work and the quiet surprised us.

After the tour we stopped at our room for a bit then headed to dinner at John’s Pizzeria. We had ordered takeout from John’s on a previous trip but this time decided to dine in. John’s is in an old church and the pizza was delicious. Great place for ambiance and food!

We walked a bit around Times Square after dinner. Visited the Disney Store and some gift shops then called it an early night.

Day 2- Chinatown and Broadway

We started with breakfast bagels at Bagel to Sandwich then took the train to Chinatown via Canal Street. This part of our tour was a bit chaotic. We planned our own Chinatown food tour with multiple stops.

This took much longer than I had planned and we ended up scrapping our plans to visit Central Park. We will add that to our next trip. At this point we had to go back to our hotel to grab a quick dinner(Los Tacos No 1) and get ready to see a show.

To say we were excited to see Stranger Things- The First Shadow would be an understatement. We have been trying to get to NYC to see the show for over a year and our schedules were not coming together to make it happen until now.

Stranger Things-The First Shadow was an incredible show with compelling story telling and outstanding special effects. It kept us on the edge of our seats the entire performance. I can’t recommend it enough and suggest planning to see it before it ends its Broadway run on January 3, 2027. Book your tickets.

After the show we picked up a slice of pizza and waited for the Midnight Moment at Times Square when all the ads stop and an art installation plays. It runs 11:57pm-12:00am and is different each month.

The Midnight Moment was a great way to finish our night in NYC. The next day we were leaving the city to experience American Dream. American Dream is the second largest mall in America and features an indoor water park, amusement park, and ski hill. Read about our day: American Dream Mall with Kids: Is It Worth the Trip? 1-Night New York City Itinerary (Fall 2023)

This was the most last minute trip to NYC we ever planned and it was inspired by wanting to see Beetlejuice before it closed on Broadway. We love including a Broadway show into our itinerary and happened to have a free weekend.

We left very early Saturday morning, arrived around noon- spent the day exploring, saw the show at night, and then departed early with a stop at LEGOLAND NY for the way home.

The most difficult part about planning a last minute visit to NYC is finding an affordable hotel. We couldn’t find anything close to Times Square so we decided to go with a hotel in SoHo Village.

This is not a short walk to the theater and we did have to rely on uber transportation.

Our NYC 1-Night Itinerary Overview:

  • Day 1- Chinatown lunch at 456 New Shanghai, walked across Brooklyn Bridge, viewed Alexander Hamilton’s Grave/Trinity Church, One World Trade Center, 9/11 Memorial, stopped at hotel to rest a bit, went to see Beetlejuice.
  • Day 2- Checked out of hotel drove to LEGOLAND New York.

Our NYC 1-Night Itinerary Details:

The 9/11 Memorial was a very surreal place for me. It may be one of the first memorials I have visited that had a personal connection to. A place that represented a history I have lived through.

It was very crowded and people were taking pictures. We took a few minutes to reflect and then continued on our way. We didn’t visit the museum.

We took the subway that night to the show, we walked a lot and needed a break. The subway was about a 15 minute ride. We got an uber (cost $56.82) for after the show to avoid the subway at night. Do what you feel most comfortable.

For our 2nd day we got up early and made the short drive to LEGOLAND New York. This is not directly in the city but if you are visiting with kids you may want to include it.

It was on our way home for us and we have been wanting to visit since it opened. LEGOLAND New York was a great park for kids. (Check out ticket deals here.) They have a LEGOLAND Hotel on-site if you would like to extend your stay.

48 Hour NYC Itinerary (January 2023)

For our 2nd visit to NYC we planned another 2 day weekend in NYC. This time we were excited to include a Broadway show and more activities to our visit.

48 Hour New York City Itinerary Overview:

  • Day 1- Checked into hotel, Halal Guys street cart lunch, Harry Potter Store, Nintendo Store, Barnes and Noble (Largest in New York), Dinner Dallas BBQ (take-out), Aladdin on Broadway
  • Day 2- Explored Times Square, Museum of Modern Art, Ellen’s Stardust Diner, American Girl Store, Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway (my daughter and I) / Knicks Game for boys

Our NYC Weekend Itinerary Details:

We drove into the city again but this time we stayed at The Westin New York at Times Square. The Westin is a great location and accommodations. Read our full review: Where to Stay in New York City: Westin New York Times Square Review

After lunch we started walking from Times Square to the Harry Potter Store. The walk is about 1.3 and will take around 30 minutes. You can take the subway if you prefer.

The Harry Potter Store is so cool! Lots of fun photo-ops including trying on Hagrid’s shoes. You can purchase Butterbeer here too. This store can get very crowded so plan extra time.

On Day 2 we had breakfast at the hotel. This is not included with your stay but you may want to add it in or stop at a bagel shop as you walk around the city.

Started with the Museum of Modern Art and then lunch at Ellen’s Stardust Diner. This place is famous for it’s wait staff singing Broadway tunes as you dine. The food was okay but you really visit for the experience.

Next up we went to the Nintendo story and the American Girl Doll store. Both are fun to explore. There is also a LEGO store in NYC that we didn’t get to but is on our list at some point.

As we made our way back to the hotel for some much needed rest we picked up cookies from Schmackery as a snack.

That evening we were splitting up. My daughter and I were going to see Dear Evan Hansen and my husband and the boys went to a Knicks game.

Before heading out we ordered pizza from John’s pizza. It may not be for everyone but we tend to order take-out often when we travel to save a little on our budget.

Quick Tip: Two times a year NYC hosts Broadway week where you can purchase 2 for 1 tickets. This is often in September and January. Check here to see if you can find a ticket deal.

First Time New York City Itinerary (February 2021)

This is our itinerary for 2 days in NYC with kids in February of 2021. We walked a lot and we packed a lot of outdoor sight seeing in because it was about a year after COVID closed down the city.

First Time New York City Itinerary Overview:

  • Day 1: Walked to Madison Square Garden, Nintendo Store, FAO Schwartz, NBC Studios Store, Magnolia Bakery, Pizza from Vito’s Slices
  • Day 2- American Natural History Museum, Lunch in Central Park (food trucks), Explored Times Square: Disney Store, M&M Store, Dinner Five Guys

First Time New York City Itinerary Details:

This trip was very unique in that it was less than a year after the pandemic. NYC Broadway shows were still closed, masks were required at most public places, and overall there were less people around.

One of my favorite places we visited was Magnolia Bakery. Located directly next to the Tonight Show marquee. This is a great spot to order treats. The best is the Banana pudding and you have to stop in to get some.

We had reservations for a 10:00am visit to the American Natural History Museum. This was the only activity we reserved during our visit. I suggest purchasing tickets in advance to save time and money at the museum. NY State residence pay what you wish upon arrival.

If you plan a winter visit you will want to visit indoor attractions to take a break from the cold weather.

Then we took a walk through Central Park, got hot dogs for lunch, and started our walk back to the hotel. Along the way home we stopped at a few more Broadway show stage doors, saw the filming of a TV show and were asked to move because we were in the shot, and picked up food from the restaurant next door; Acuario Cafe.

Acuario Café is located in a small alley way and is an unassuming gem. The food was so good and I was really glad we made a point to stop.

After a rest we made our way to Times Square. Times Square is something everyone should see on their first visit to New York City but after you see it there is not much else to do.

We visited the Disney store, the M&M store, and saw the 2021 NYE ball. It was busy but the kids were excited to see the area and it is part of the NYC experience.

For dinner that night we end up eating Five Guys. It was not ideal, we really wanted to experience something that we couldn’t get at home but the truck we had planned on eating at was closed for the night.

Our first visit to NYC was a lot of fun but the impact the COVID shutdown had on the businesses was evident. We couldn’t wait to visit again once things got back to pre-covid days.

Broadway with Teens- Is it Worth it?

Yes!! This is a simple answer for us. Broadway with teens is definitely worth it. There are so many different shows for anyone’s interests that you will want to include a show with your visit.

From seeing Aladdin when the kids were small to seeing Stranger Things- The First Shadow this year, the impact of watching a live performance is unmatched and seeing a Broadway show should be on everyone’s bucket list. Not sure which Broadway show is for you? Browse Broadway tickets.

New York City With Teens- Is It Worth It & Final Thoughts

I think New York City with teens is worth a trip. NYC offers so many unique experiences that most teens will discover something that interests them, then you can build an itinerary around those interests.

Everything I suggest are things my family has done and enjoyed, but consider your own interests and work around them. Plan breaks and time to take in the city and you will have a great trip with your family.
