What is Lightning Lane at Disney World

Lightning Lane is a paid ride reservation system that allows guests to reserve ride times before they arrive at the parks. This means you will have shorter wait times and ideally ensure you will get on your favorite rides and attractions.

Lightning Lane Options

There are three options for Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World. They are Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Individual Lightning Lane, and Lightning Lane Premier Pass.

Lightning Lane replaced Genie+ on July 24, 2024.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass

Guests may reserve 3 experiences at the park. 1 from tier 1 and 2 from tier 2. (More on tiers below.)

Once you use your first experience you can book another one. From what I understand once you use one you can book another, it isn’t a time period to book. This is a bit different from the 120 minute window of Genie+.

Lightning Lane is one entry per attraction, per day. If you are park hopping you can make Lightning Lane reservations at other parks.

Digital Downloads of select attractions is also included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

Individual Lightning Lane

Guests may reserve a one-time ride for specific attractions. This is a separate paid fee and these attractions are not included in the Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass

Lightning Lane Premier Pass will begin on October 30, 2024. Guests staying at a deluxe resort can purchase the Lightning Lane Premier Pass.

This pass allows guests a one time entry to all Lightning Lane Experiences (includes multi-pass attractions and individual attractions) at one park. This pass can be booked 7 days from check-in date.

Cost for the Lightning Lane Premier Pass will range from $129.00 to $449.00 per person/per day. This is in addition to park admission ticket.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass will also include digital downloads from select attractions.

Things to Know

Guests staying on-site at a Walt Disney World resort can purchase passes up to 7 days in advance of their stay. If you arrive August 1st for a week, you can purchase Lighting Lane for all of your park days for that trip (up to 14 days).

You will need a theme park admission ticket prior to booking and can start purchase at 7:00am EST 7 days in advance.

Off-site guests can purchase 3 days in advance of their day of visit.

Guests can purchase BOTH Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. The Lightning Lane Single Pass attractions are not part of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass tiers.

Be sure to download the My Disney Experience App and connect everyone in your Friends & Family to make sure when you book everyone is included.

You will need to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass and/or Lightning Lane Single Pass for everyone in your travel party.

Some attractions have Virtual Queues. Virtual Queues are a boarding group that guests may reserve for free on the My Disney Experience App.

These open at 7:00am and again at 1:00pm day of visit. They “sell out” within minutes but they are free to guests.

If you do not secure a Virtual Queue for those attractions your only option to ride is by purchasing the Lightning Lane Single Pass.

Is Lightning Lane Any Good

We used Lightning Lane on our recent trip for Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom, on different days. From my experience I thought it was worth it. We were able to ride all attractions at least once with minimal wait times.

I love that on-site guests can make these ride experience reservations before they arrive. It allows us to plan dining and ride times before we arrive, and that means less time on my phone.

A lot of people are unhappy that Lightning Lane has a cost, and with the addition of Lightning Lane Premier Pass, I can understand from a cost perspective.

It would be nice to go back to the “free fastpass” days but the truth is most theme parks have a paid line skipping service. Universal Express Pass is an example where the cost is high but people still love it.

In an attempt to keep guests happy Disney is finding the balance between on-site perks and making profit. I hope the price point stays where it is at because it is an added expense, especially for families.

Adding Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass to our theme park days as a family of five will be $100.00’s of dollars extra a day. If we did both at Magic Kingdom it would cost at least $235.00.

If we added Lightning Lane Premier Pass we would spend at least $645.00 before general admission tickets.

There are definitely choices to be made when deciding if this is right for you. We take a look at our budget for Disney and then see where or how we can make it work.
