Great Family Hotel Reykjavik Iceland with Kids

Are you looking for a great family hotel in Reykjavik Iceland with kids? There are many options but we found one that has a great location and fit our budget for Reykjavik accommodations with kids.

Finding a great hotel when traveling with kids is an important part of your travel planning. You want to find a place that meets the needs of your family as well as fits into your family travel budget.

Read on for where we stayed and our review of a great Reykjavik family hotel.

Where to Find a Great Family Hotel Reykjavik

There are many hotel options in Reykjavik but we needed one that would fit our family of five comfortably and be within our budget.

When I started my research for where to stay we needed two things. First the hotel needed to have comfortable sleeping space for our family of 5. This meant we each needed a bed.

Second the hotel needed to be centrally located to Reykjavik because we would not have a car and were focusing our activities in the city.

We found a great family hotel in Reykjavik with the Odinsve Hotel Apartments. These were budget friendly, for Iceland standards, and offered a fantastic location to everything we wanted to see. It was a great place to stay for our trip to Iceland.

Overview of Hotel Odinsve in Reykjavik

It is important to know that Hotel Odinsve is actually two locations. There is the Hotel Odinsve and the Odinsve Hotel Apartments.

We stayed at the Odinsve Hotel Apartments. They are located across from the hotel and on the main shopping street. All guests check-in at the Hotel Odinsve and the front desk will assist you with where to find your room.

Both locations are convenient to the local activities and attractions. When you are done reading this check out our full itinerary for Iceland in this post: Family Trip to Iceland: Our 2 Days in Iceland Itinerary

How to Get to The Reykjavik Hotel the Hotel Odinsve

The two options for getting to Reykjavik city centre is to take a bus from the airport or drive/rent a car. If you are driving be sure to do your research on where to park as well as directions.

I recommend booking a shuttle bus from the airport to the centre of Reykjavik and then make the short walk to your hotel. For our Iceland family vacation we didn’t leave the city so a car was not necessary. If you are planning on touring more of Iceland you will need a car or have tours booked.

Attractions Close to the Hotel Odinsve

The Hotel Odinsve is minutes’ walk to the Harpa Concert Hall, Lutheran Hallgrimskirkja Parish Church, City Center, National Museum of Iceland Solfar Sculpture (Stainless-Steel Sun Voyager sculpture), numerous gift shop locations, as well as great food options for the whole family.

If you are hoping to visit the Blue Lagoon you will need to reserve transportation. It is a short drive from Reykjavik but is not within walking distance.

The Perlan Museum is a kid-friendly attraction we included in our visit and worth checking out. It is about a 25-minute walk so be prepared if you choose to walk it. Uber is also available in the city.

One of my concerns with visiting Iceland with a family was where we would eat. We ended up finding great places to eat that were casual and budget friendly for our trip. I share them all in my Iceland itinerary post.

Another popular thing to see in Iceland is the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are best seen in the winter months away from the city. The chances are very small of seeing the Northern Lights during your stay in Reykjavik.

Accommodations at the Hotel Odinsve

The Odinsve hotel is a 4-star hotel that offers rooms and apartments to their guests.

We stayed in the 2 Bedroom apartment and it was a great choice for our stay in Reykjavik. The rooms have 2 twin beds or they could be pushed together for 1 queen. There was also a pull-out sofa. It also has a private bathrooms and family rooms.

The apartments offer 10 apartments that come with flat-screen TV, kitchenette with microwave, stove top, and refrigerator. All locations are a short walk to family-friendly attractions. I was really happy that the harbour and popular tourist attractions were within walking distance to the hotel.

The modern rooms and spacious accommodations made the Odinsve Hotel Apartments an ideal place for our family.

Amenities at the Hotel Odinsve

Guests can dine at the on-site restaurant Snaps. Snaps is fine dining and we did not have time in our itinerary to try it. Free wi-fi, a 24 hour business centre, and a safety deposit box is available to guests as well.

One of the things the hotel does not have is a swimming pool or hot tub. When researching family-friendly hotels I often look for places that have a swimming pool or hot tub but hotels in cities don’t typically have the space for them. There is also not a fitness center at the hotel.

These were not deal breakers for us. We spent all of our time exploring the city and getting lots of steps in. If these amenities are important to you, this hotel might not be a good choice for your family.

We arrived early in the morning, before check-in, and were happy to learn the hotel offered luggage storage. Concierge service can assist you with this and direct you with where to go while you wait for your room.

Review of the Hotel Odinsve

We found a great place in the Odinsve Hotel Apartments. I though it was a great value and great location. The central location and being withing a 10-minute walk to everything we wanted to see made it a perfect place for us.

We visited Iceland in June so walking around the city center was easy! The weather was fairly mild for the things we wanted to see and do.

This was our first visit to Iceland. I had no idea what to expect or where to stay. I was really happy with the location. Once we walked around for half the day we became familiar with the area and it was very easy to navigate.

The location felt safe too. We had a 3:00am flight and walking to our shuttle stop at that time wasn’t a concern. It helped that there was only 2 hours of night during our June visit!

The rooms were clean and basic. I think they were pretty standard for what to expect in hotel rooms in Europe. The bedding gave me an “IKEA vibe” but were comfortable and warm. The rooms had blackout curtains so we could sleep even when it was light out.

I liked having a refrigerator because it allowed us to stop at the local grocery store for snacks and drinks. If we were staying for a longer trip we would have taken advantage of buying groceries to save money.

The best hotels are the ones you would stay in again. If we ever have the opportunity to visit Reykjavík again we would definetly stay at the Odinsve Apartments.
